Introducing: Crochet Creatures

Isn't this little mushroom guy the cutest?

I finished him up last week and delivered him on Monday! He's wearing a tiny little vest and a moss-covered messenger bag that really opens (pause for applause).

The Inspiration:

I know it looks fake, but this is a real photo of a mushroom that was growing in their yard. I've never seen a mushroom like this in real life and I absolutely love that it looks like it came out of a fairy tale. It's so magical. I feel like it was begging to become a character.

The Details:

I wish I had measured him before I delivered (lesson learned for next time), but I don't think he was more than 8" tall. He's a pretty small guy.

Fun fact: Even though these little creatures look like toys, the eyes and small details are actually a choking hazard for small children. I like to think of them as little bookshelf guardians or collectibles for adults who appreciate the whimsical things in life.

Almost everything was made with patterns from the book Crochet Impkins by Megan Lapp. I did go rogue with a few things like adding the moss and button to the bag, but almost everything else is the same as what you'd find in that book.

I've made quite a few of these little creatures and every time I make one, I have a new idea for how I could make it better. I've added embroidery, jewelry, and beading, but this time I wanted to add some depth and dimension. I used orange pigment and a really fluffy makeup brush to create a gradient from the center of his head so it looks a bit more realistic. I'm really happy with how it turned out and I'm excited to practice this concept as I make more!

Coming Soon (Maybe)

Stay tuned as I create and share more of these! I did have a mini series earlier this year where I rolled dice to help me randomly select features from the pattern book. They turned out so cute! Let me know if you think I should revive that series this winter!

Should I revive the series and make more of these little creatures?

  • Yes

  • ULTRA YES
